The World's Richest Man strikes again ... without Ethics

* EMPLOYERS surprise and displeasure, who fear "inside information"

Every day that passes, the world's richest Mexican, Carlos Slim, surprising both European entrepreneurs as well as teachers of Business Ethics of the most prestigious universities in the world with their movement to expand its economic tentacles.

In Spain, for example, businessmen ranging from surprise to surprise with the actions of Slim.

Cada día que pasa, el mexicano más rico del mundo, Carlos Slim, sorprende tanto a los empresarios europeos como a los profesores de Etica de los Negocios de las universidades más prestigiadas del mundo, con sus movimientos tendientes a expandir sus tentáculos económicos.

En España, por ejemplo, los hombres de negocios van de sorpresa en sorpresa con el actuar de Slim.

1o Sin ser poseedor de la mayor parte de las acciones, entró al consejo de administración del consorcio español  Criteria, que es el principal accionista de TELEFONICA,a su vez la principal competidora de AMERICA MOVIL, la compañía de Slim en el ámbito de la telefonía movil.

(En México, TELEFONICA opera MOVISTAR. Y en dicho país, ambas empresas han tenido serios enfrentamientos, no sólo comerciales, sino incluso hasta de carácter jurídico. ¿Cómo es posible, entonces, que Slim esté ahora asociado con la firma poseedora de la mayor parte de las acciones de TELEFONICA?).

Pues bien, si tal situación sorprendió y generó serios cuestionamientos entre los estudiosos de la ética de los negocios, ahora resulta que Slim ha dado un pasó más atrevido, que ha provocado no sólo desconcierto, sino también desagradables comentarios. En efecto, resulta que...

2o Trascendió que Carlos Slim va a comprar acciones de la empresa lusa de telefonía PORTUGAL TELECOM, que a su vez compite con la española TELEFONICA por hacerse de la brasileña  VIVO. 

De hecho, la española TELEFONICA (MOVISTAR) ha ofrecido a la portugesa PORTUGAL TELECOM un precio extraordinario para comprarle el 50% de las acciones que posee de la brasileña VIVO.

Los círculos empresariales europeos se preguntan:¿cómo puede hacer eso?

Especialistas en ética de los negocios de España y Estados Unidos le han escrito por correo electrónico a este columnista para preguntar: 

* ¿Cómo puede hacer Slim eso? 

* ¿Qué acaso no tiene ética?

* ¿Cómo es que primero entra al Consejo de Administración del principal accionista de su competidora, la española TELEFONICA-MOVISTAR, y luego sale con que también va a entrar en el consejo de la portuguesa PORTUGAL TELECOM, principal competidora de la española? 

* ¿De qué se trata?

¿Qué acaso tal maniobra no le permite competir deslealmente, puesto que poseería información privilegiada para beneficio desus intereses personales?

En fin, usted y yo podemos tener nuestro propio punto de vista,pero esas son las preguntas que ayer nos hicieron. Las compartimos con usted. ¿Qué opina?

1 .- It is the majority shareholder.

2 .- Share and seat on the board of Criteria, a company that is the main shareholder of the leading rival of Carlos Slim in the field of mobile telephony.

Indeed, Criteria is the main shareholder of MOVISTAR, AMERICA MOVIL main competitor.

3 .- As if that were not enough, Slim has made the life of squares to phones in Mexico.

4 .- And as if that were not enough, it turns out that the phone has been associated with the group Televisa and MEGACO, to compete with Telmex in fiber optics.

Here one could ask:

No one doubts the courage of Carlos Slim ... but it is honest, ethical, that is on the board of the group that is the main shareholder ded its main competitor?

In the U.S., one of the heads of Google left the board of Apple, when Google became a competitor of this one, for ethical reasons.

Slim's case in Spain, then, surely will be debated in Business Ethics classes of universities.

¿Es Etico lo que Hace Slim en España?

Bueno, pues resulta que hoy Carlos Slim ha ingresado al consejo de administración del Grupo Criteria, de España.

Lo más curioso de ello es que la incorporación de Carlos a tal Grupo hispano, presenta características que la hacen sorprendente:

1.- No es el socio mayoritario.

2.- Comparte ya asiento en el consejo de administración de Criteria, empresa que es la principal accionista de la principal empresa rival de Carlos Slim en el ámbito de la telefonía movil.

En efecto, Criteria es el principal accionista de MOVISTAR, principal competidor de AMERICA MOVIL.

3.- Por si ello fuera poco, Slim le ha hecho la vida de cuadritos a TELEFONICA en territorio mexicano.

4.- Y por si ello no fuera poco, resulta que TELEFONICA se ha asociado con TELEVISA y la agrupación MEGACABLE, para competir con TELMEX  en fibra óptica.

Aquí cabe una pregunta:

Nadie duda de la audacia de Carlos Slim...¿pero es honesto, ético, que esté en el consejo de administración del grupo que es el principal accionista ded su principal competidora? 

En Estados Unidos, una de las cabezas de Google abandonó el consejo de Apple, cuando Google se convirtió en competidora de ésta, por razones éticas.

El caso de Slim en España, pues, seguramente pasará a ser tema de debate en las clases de Etica Empresarial de las Universidades.
